About Us

Book Addiction is the brainchild of Karyn, a New Zealander living in Melbourne, Australia. Started as a monthly book box during the pandemic, we turned to making special editions when Karyn realised that Australian publishers were not creating beautiful hardcover books for their local customers. For years Australians have had to pay expensive shipping fees to get special editions from the UK and US, and it’s Karyn’s belief that everyone should be able to afford beautiful books. 

Karyn attended a local book launch where the question was raised about how much input the author has in the design of the cover of their book. When the answer from the author was ‘not much’, Karyn had an epiphany: what better way to celebrate an author’s story than by making it look the way they always wanted it to look? And so a new brand proposition was created! 

We work closely with the author of each special edition to choose the artist/s, the scenes to show on covers and endpapers, and all the other design elements. The author is consulted at every stage of the process to make sure they love the creation. This means the time it takes to create each edition can be lengthy, but it’s Karyn’s firm belief that it’s better to take longer to make a quality product than it is to rush out a book that the author feels only okay about. It should be a trophy and that’s what Book Addiction is trying to produce with every book they make.

For now, Book Addiction is a one-woman show, although Karyn’s supportive husband is often roped in to carry heavy boxes and to listen to her talk about books and publishing. This small business is truly a labour of love for an owner who can’t remember a time when she couldn’t read, and she’s so excited to see how it grows and reaches more readers in the future.
